The work included conducting soil surveys and testing the undrained shear strength using the Field Vane Shear Test and conducting Piezocone Penetration Tests (CPTu) to measure water pressure to obtain data for soil quality improvement using Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) methods. The project was at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan province. The soft and loose soil layers (Bangkok Soft Clay) in the area required soil quality surveys and testing from very soft to medium stiff clay in order to improve the soil quality using PVD methods.
Field Testing:
Soil investigation and collection of undisturbed soil samples using piston sampling method up to a depth of approximately 16 meters. A total of 36 boreholes were made.
Field vane shear testing in 26 boreholes.
Piezocone penetration testing and dissipation testing in 36 boreholes.
Laboratory Testing:
Sieve analysis, Atterberg limit test, water content, unit weight, and specific gravity testing of 36 soil samples.
