Seismic Refraction Survey for Determining Soil/Rock Layer Thickness

Seismic refraction surveys are conducted to evaluate the thickness of soil and rock layers beneath the ground. This is achieved by measuring the P-wave velocity of these layers, which helps in interpreting the stratigraphy. The obtained thickness data is crucial for designing foundations for houses, buildings, or factories.

STS Group provides this survey service using the Geode Exploration Seismograph from the USA (Figure 1). The survey process begins with the installation of geophones (Figure 2) along the desired survey line at equal intervals. Seismic waves are then generated using a hammer or weight drop (Figure 3). These waves propagate underground and, upon encountering layers with different mechanical properties, are reflected and/or refracted back to the surface. The recorded waves (Figure 4) are then interpreted to determine the soil/rock layers, as shown in Figure 5.
